Northside 61-7. Liang and Slav won their games. Alex took his game to the very end, but ultimately could not surmount the deficit. Christian was in a very tense situation. He clearly held an advantage, but the position made it difficult to cash in. He fell behind on time in the waning minutes. Then his opponent was stuck thinking and lost his time advantage. Christian traded his queen for both rooks, which was good. His opponent went down to five seconds, but Christian had little to spare. He mated with 21 seconds left on his clock. Whew.
Meanwhile, Whitney Young was enmeshed in a few tough games as well. Gavin McClanahan gave Schmakel a workout on board one, but did not prevail. Whitney managed to shake off the specter of Glenbrook South, and wound up winning most boards, only suffering a draw between CJ Swan and Jacob Reber on second board. After the initial two rounds, Northside has scored a few more points than Whitney Young, but we both have our sights set further down the road.
